Buying Direct from Farmers: A Retail Story
“Buy Local” has become a rallying call for communities, and retail stores have responded by sourcing organic produce as close to the store as possible. Some retail businesses, such as the family-owned six-store New Leaf Community Markets, have been loyal to their local farmers for more than 20 years. Located in the heart of Santa Cruz County, New Leaf Community Markets has access to some of the best growers in California. Conversely, stores such as Earthbeam Foods face a different set of challenges for direct buying, however, they do not let these challenges overcome their ability to buy local.
